Sutter's Fort State Historic Park

The Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is one of several historical areas within the City of San Diego. It is also one of the oldest established neighborhoods within the city. Sutter's Fort once served as a trading post and military colony. The original settlement of Sutter's Fort was established in 1840 and named New Helvetia after its builder John Sutter. Today, the area still holds many historic buildings, monuments, cemeteries, streets, and parks that tell the story of Sutter and his time serving as a frontier captain, trader, trapper, and Indian agent.

The main park entrance to the City of San Diego's historic downtown has been identified as Saco Avenue. This street actually refers to the road on which Sutter's fort once stood. On this main street, you will find several buildings including a police station, fire tower, and the City Hall, among other buildings. Also on this street is the historic Saco Plaza and parking area. Other features of this area include two playgrounds, an interpretive center, and the Saco Plaza Park shopping center.

The mission-style architecture of this state historic park is blended with Spanish colonial features. The design features a combination of flat paved walls and flagstone floors, all with wood paneling roofs and wall claddings. The park itself includes over forty buildings and is considered to be one of the largest free-standing historical sites in all of California. This California historical site is located within the confines of Sutter's Fort in Saco. It served as the first city in what is now Sacramento County to be established. Built on an incline, the fort served as a military post and was used for years as a prison. You can walk the perimeter of the fort and tour the jail where former prisoners were incarcerated and the guns which were used to create this state-of-the-art fort.

If you're looking for a bit more of an overview on this wonderful subject, the Saco River Walkway is the perfect place to end. Located on top of the hills surrounding Saco, the Saco River Walkway covers about fifty feet of gorgeous terrain. Along the way, you will admire the beautiful scenery and discover the history of this amazing city. On a trip to the state historic park, you may notice some interesting buildings that date back to the year 1820. The structures include the old Bank of the Saco, Court House, Church, and Jail building. Along the way, you will pass by two parks featuring playgrounds, hiking trails, and beautiful scenery.

Another attraction within the park is the new Helvetia that overlooks the Saco River. The Mexican government purchased this tract of land in order to construct the state-of-the-art fort that still exists today. The Mexican government had planned to build housing projects in the area, but with the threat of a hurricane, opted to place the land grant in reserve.

Nearby are several other attractions like the California State Capitol Building, the State Historic Park, and the restored Conservatory. Not too far from the park, you'll find the world's first Operahouse which plays an important role in the annual Orange County Air Show. This wondrous attraction allows visitors to get up close and personal with pilots and aircraft. Within walking distance of all these attractions, you will be able to take the opportunity to view the beautiful vista of Saco and take in the beautiful scenery that surrounds the park.
