The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania may just be one of the best-kept secrets in the United States. If you are a college student you know about it. If you're not, the chances are good that you have never heard of it. But what is this amazing arboretum of Pennsylvania that has such a distinct arboretum garden?

The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania sometimes referred to as the PSU Arboretum, is truly the state's official arboretum. It is open to the public daily except on major holidays. It is situated at 100 East Northwestern Avenue, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is definitely a unique experience and educational tour. You will see some of the rarest native plants on the planet as well as lots of amazing architectural ironworks that were created by the immigrants that came to the United States centuries ago.

The campus of Morris University is situated in Philadelphia. There are many beautiful attractions near this great university. They are all part of the university's comprehensive outdoor garden system that is an extension of the School of Art and Design. In addition to the gardens, there is an interpretative center that gives students and teachers a chance to explore the rich oral history of Philadelphia and the impact that immigration and settlement had on its landscape. You can visit the school's museums, the Jewish Museum, or the Graduate Theological Institute while you are in town.

A Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania group tour is a great way to learn about the rich history of one of America's greatest cities. You will travel along with the arboretum and through some of its most scenic gardens as you listen to the sounds of nature. Each day you will return to your assigned area and participate in a guided self-guided walking tour. The guided nature walks along the arboretum allow you to see some of the plant communities that are unique to this area of the city. Walking in the trees gives you a chance to get a closer look at some of the rarest and most beautiful species of plants.

One of the most popular programs offered in the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania is their "Phyllis and Friends" walking tour and the "Philly Botanical Garden", which allows participants to go on a free walking tour of some of the more unusual plant communities found in the city. The "Philly Botanical Garden" allows you to view many trees and flowers that you would not normally see anywhere. On a recent visit, I saw several rare species of sycamore and spruce trees. My favorite trees were actually in the same section as my last appointment, so I was able to walk a little farther away from my spot and have a better view of these plants. I definitely learned a lot while walking through the forest and enjoying the flora of my new Philadelphia neighborhood!

The "Philly Botanical Garden" is another featured tour offered in the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania. This guided tour begins at the Science Center located within the campus. From there, participants will move along an outdoor carpetway to a series of ponds where they can view a wide array of different types of aquatic life. After seeing this display of nature, the group will move back to the Science Center for another spectacular display of plants and animals. The tour usually lasts for a full day, but weather permitting participants can take the tour two additional times during the day if desired.

Another featured attraction that the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania has to offer is its Penn Square Park located on the campus. This park serves as a great place to enjoy the beautiful sights of Broad Street in all its glory. A popular attraction amongst students and faculty alike, the park has multiple stages featuring local acts or music, a food court with many restaurants around the area, and the famous "Moosic Corner" where one can sit and enjoy the sounds of nature and the passersby.

The third and final featured tour that the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania offers is their Free State Park tour. While I found the guided nature walks to be entertaining and informative, I did not really find the "Free State Park" tour to be all that interesting. It certainly would not have been my first choice for a getaway vacation, but I can certainly say that I enjoyed it enough to try it out once during my time in Hershey.
