  The menu at EL Fenix was inspired by the Tex-Mex food of the Meso Maya. The restaurant opened in the 1960s in the Casa Linda Shopping Center and quickly became a Dallas favorite. Originally, the menu consisted of mostly American foods, like tamales and hamburgers. However, the owners changed the menu and started serving Mexican dishes in combination plates. The resulting style is known as Tex-Mex and has been copied but never duplicated. The company also funds a number of organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer's Association of Dallas, and the Autism Treatment Center.
